Tip of the Month: Transfer Items from Hartland and Thetford
NPL is participating in a pilot program with Hartland Public Library and Thetford’s two library branches, Latham and George Peabody, to share items among our libraries more easily. If one of these libraries has an item you’re looking for, you can now have it sent to NPL without requesting an interlibrary loan! Instead, you can simply place a hold on the item in our online catalog and choose NPL as your pickup location.
To get started, visit our online catalog and search for an item. If you see a result the matches the item you’re looking for, but it says “Available at another library,” click on “Where is it?” If you don’t see any results for your item, try clicking on the OneCard tab to see whether a different OneCard library has the item. The libraries participating in the pilot program are all OneCard libraries, so again, you can check to see whether one of them has it by clicking on “Where is it?”

A pop-up box will show you all OneCard libraries that own the item.

If you see Hartland, Latham, or George Peabody listed, close the window and click on “Place Hold.”

You’ll then be prompted to log in using your library card barcode number and password. If you don’t know this information, please contact the library at circulation.desk@norwichlibrary.org or (802) 649-1184.

Once you’ve logged in, you can select where you want to pick up your hold. The location defaults to NPL, but if you’d like to pick the item up at one of the other libraries, you can do that instead. If you select NPL, the item will be sent here for you to pick up. Finally, click “Submit Hold Request.”

Once the item is ready for you to pick up, you’ll get a notification via your preferred method!
If you receive an error message like the one below when you place the hold, it means there aren’t any items available to place on hold. In this case, please place an interlibrary loan request using this form.

Please note that if an item is less than six months old, you won’t be able to have it sent to NPL from another library. However, if you’d like to go to the library in person, you’ll still be able to check it out there.
