Youth Services Assistant

The Norwich Public Library seeks an energetic and dedicated individual interested in joining our team. We are a busy library and are looking for a passionate Youth Services Assistant to become a part of our community! This position will focus on providing services in the Youth Services Department, but will also work within other library areas as needed.

Job responsibilities include: 

  • Collaboration with the Youth Services Librarian in developing programs for youth and families
  • Provides circulation and reference assistance
  • Maintain a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment

Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with children and families
  • Proficient with technology

What does a typical day look like for the Youth Services Assistant? 

You’ll spend the majority of your time in the youth services department doing everything from pulling books for displays to helping kids and caregivers find the materials and information they need to checking out materials. Your day may also include shelving returned items, helping prepare materials for upcoming programs including craft preparation, straightening shelves, or assisting with programs.

One of the most important aspects of the job will be brainstorming with the Youth Services Librarian about timely, on trend ideas for displays and programs that provide learning and leisure opportunities for the Norwich community of kids from newborns through high school and their caregiver. Enjoying conversation and collaboration are a must!

As a full member of the staff, you will be expected, at times, to provide service in other areas of the library.

What experience qualifies YOU to be our New Youth Services Assistant?

Examples of previous employment could include daycare providers, camp counselors, or educators. Do not be dissuaded if you don’t have formal library experience! Enjoying working with children, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, and creativity are the key qualities.

This position is 20 hours per week & reports to the Youth Services Librarian.
