On Display: “Norwich Nature, Real & Imagined” Youth Art Show

We asked kids and teens 4 years old and up to submit a piece of art inspired by the natural beauty surrounding us! Stop by the community room all month to see all the local artistic talent (check the community room schedule here for availability).

Join us for a reception celebrating the artists on Wednesday, September 6th from 4pm-5:30pm.

Big Tree Quest: Launch Party

The Library is thrilled to launch our first ever Big Tree Quest! Come learn all about the program, hear from tree experts, make a tree-themed craft, and pick up all your quest materials (while enjoying some refreshments of course!). 

The Big Tree Quest invites participants of all ages to get outside and find the biggest trees they can in Norwich and our adjacent Vermont towns this fall, with awards in multiple categories. Visit NorwichLibrary.org/BigTreeQuest for all the details.

E-Bikes at NPL

Vital Communities’ E-Bikes Lending Library is coming to NPL! Presented by the Norwich Energy Committee. 

Reserve a bike (four to choose from) for an overnight rental or come to the demo day for a test ride on Saturday September 16th from 10am-3pm. This is a great way to test out an e-bike and see if it might be a good fit for your lifestyle!

Big Tree Quest: Tree Identification Walk for Kids

Join Lynnwood and Lindsay (of the Norwich Conservation Commission) on the Norwich Green to learn the basics of how to identify a plant, apply that information to look at common trees, practice measuring and describing the location of the trees, and participate in hands-on activities.

Age: Geared to elementary students, but older children are welcome as well. A parent, guardian, or responsible older sibling must accompany any child under age 9. All parents welcome! 

Materials: Bring your tree guide if you have one, and a tape measure if you have one (extra tape measures available at the Library). We will be starting a tree journal. Please bring a small lined or graph paper journal (approx 6′”x 8″) if possible. We will have several extra on hand for children who don’t have one.

LEGO Tuesdays

Create what you want or participate in our weekly challenges. Creations will be displayed in the youth services room each week and you’ll de-construct your masterpiece the following week. Snacks provided. This is a drop-in event. Children under 5th grade must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Kids’ Advisory & Volunteer Team

Interested in volunteering at the library? Join the Kids’ Advisory & Volunteer team, to help plan programs, suggest new books, movies, and Switch games to purchase and help with everything from straightening shelves to cleaning toys! For 5th graders and up.

Wild Readers Book Club

Join Erin in reading The Ember Stone, the first book in The Last Firehawk book series, and become a member of the Wild Readers Book Club! Our first meeting date is to be announced, but you can pick up your book at the Children’s Desk starting on Wednesday, September 13th. This group is designed for children moving into or confidently reading early chapter books, approximately 1st-3rd grade. Already read the book? No problem! You can still join the fun!

Make It: Sewing

Bring a project you’re working on or getting started on something new! From embroidery to machine sewing, we’ll have some materials – including sewing machines! – to get you started on your next project. For 4th grade and up (children below 5th grade must be accompanied by a caregiver).

Stories from The Witness Tree: A Look Back in Norwich Time

Join the Norwich Historical Society, the Norwich Public Library, and cartoonist Emily Zea for 6 weeks of local history and zine making! Kids will have the opportunity to view historical photographs, hear local stories, learn to draw, and put together a zine. This is a six week program and space is limited. Suggested ages: 10 years old and up. >>Please register here<<

NPL Writing Group

We’re back after a summer hiatus with NPL’s friendly monthly writing group! Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just interested in dabbling, come on by. NPL staff will facilitate playing with writing prompts, discussing great writing, and sharing as we go. New members always welcome.

Register here to reserve your spot for our September gathering (you can indicate on the form if you are interested in having an excerpt of your own writing workshopped during the session). 

The group will meet every second Thursday of the month at the same time (*this September meeting ONLY is the third Thursday). Monthly participation is encouraged, but there’s no commitment.
