Sarah Drage Olson

Sarah Drage Olson (b. 1993) lives and works in the Upper Valley, but she is a recent transplant to the area from the Midwest. Mostly self-taught, she has been painting and drawing (to greater and lesser effect) throughout her entire life. Her favorite media are acrylics and pastels. She splits her free time between visual art and her research on Renaissance revenge tragedies.

400 Miles Down the Connecticut River

New England’s longest river, the Connecticut, is rich in history. Michael Tougias, author of fourteen books about New England, offers a narrated slide presentation that takes the viewer down the entire 410 miles of the river, discussing history from the days of loggers, Indian Wars, steamships, and canals.

Staying Scam Savvy in an AI World

Dodging online fraud attempts has evolved with the advent of AI-fueled exploits. Going or gone are the days of relying on typos and poor grammar as red flags that signal bad intentions. Current phishing messages include accurate personal details and direct the unwary to near-perfect copycat websites designed to harvest login credentials. Come and hear about the latest scams followed by a discussion on how to stay safe.

Dave Smith of Norwich, a retired school psychologist, speaks locally on strategies for protecting ourselves from scamming and hacking. He has taught a half dozen courses on this topic through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Dartmouth and sees no evidence of the risk diminishing. Dave believes we need both a better understanding of the criminals’ methods and more public empathy for those who have been victimized. We are outnumbered by the bad guys and need to stick together.

NPL Writing Group

NPL’s friendly monthly writing group! Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just interested in dabbling, come on by. NPL staff will facilitate playing with writing prompts, discussing great writing, and sharing as we go.

Register HERE to reserve your spot for our September gathering (you can indicate on the form if you are interested in having an excerpt of your own writing workshopped during the session). 

The group will meet every third Tuesday of the month. Monthly participation is encouraged, but there’s no commitment. New members are always welcome!
