Resource Spotlight: New Mysteries

Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller lovers, here are some clues to the newest books on our shelves.

by Janis Murcic, fellow mystery lover

Giancarlo Carofiglio, A Fine Line (translated from the Italian May 2016)
The fifth in a legal mystery series about Guido Guerrieri, an Italian public defender in Bari. This gifted writer, a former prosecutor, skillfully crafts mysteries that bind together a deep understanding of human nature and literary love, with cynicism from years of criminal justice experience in Italy. One of my favorite contemporary international authors in this genre. His first mystery in this series is An Involuntary Witness. Although each book can be read independently, if read from the beginning, the reader can follow with interest Guido’s romantic highs and lows.

Alan Furst, A Hero of France (May 2016)
Another favorite author who writes well-researched, historical WWII espionage suspense novels. This story focuses on the French Resistance in Nazi-occupied France. Furst’s other WWII thrillers have taken place in Paris, Warsaw, the Balkans, and Greece, among other European cities and nations involved in the war. A new Alan Furst suspense novel is always a treat.

Paul Vidich, An Honorable Man (April 2016)
“A moody debut spy novel inspired by real events…Dead-on Cold War fiction. Noir to the bone.” —Kirkus Reviews.

“A debut espionage novel in the style of Alan Furst and John le Carré, An Honorable Man is a chilling Cold War spy thriller set in 1950s Washington, D.C.” —Publishers Weekly Top Ten Mysteries & Thrillers of Spring 2016

Amy Stewart, Girl Waits with Gun (Paperback May 2016)
A New York Times Editor’s Choice for 2015, this is a “smart, romping adventure, featuring some of the most memorable and powerful female characters I’ve seen in print for a long time. I loved every page as I followed the Kopp sisters through a too-good-to-be-true (but mostly true!) tale of violence, courage, stubbornness, and resourcefulness.” — Elizabeth Gilbert.

Girl Waits with Gun, based on a true story, is Book 1 of a two-book series about the “Kopp Sisters.” The second is Lady Cop Makes Trouble, due out in September.

There are many other mysteries, thrillers, and suspense novels new to our shelves, including David Baldacci’s latest The Last Mile (April 2016). Send your favorite writers to me at Janis.Murcic@norwichlibrary.org
