The Norwich Public Library is thrilled to announce our participation in Vermont Reads Shackleton, a statewide community reading program of the Vermont Humanities Council. We’ll be distributing copies of two books: Caroline Alexander’s The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition and Jennifer Armstrong’s Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World. Stop by the library to pick up your free copy.
Renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set sail aboard the Endurance in August 1914, just days before the start of World War I. They were in pursuit of an unclaimed prize in the history of exploration: the first crossing on foot of Antarctica. The crew came within eighty-five miles of the continent when the ship was trapped in the pack ice. After nine anxious months, the ship was crushed, leaving the crew stranded.
The books give riveting accounts of this expedition, one of history’s greatest epics of survival. Both feature Frank Hurley’s stunning photography, which brings to life the terrible beauty of that desolate region, the awful destruction of the ship, and the crew’s heroic daily struggle to stay alive and make their way back home.
NPL will be featuring a wide variety of Shackleton- and Antarctica-related programming for all ages through March. Check our online events calendar and our social media accounts for details.
