Computer and Internet Use Policies and Guidelines

INTERNET ACCESS

The Norwich Public Library is committed to providing public access to the Internet and the valuable informational, educational and cultural resources it provides for the community. Four Internet accessible computers are available for users.   You do not need a library card in order to use the computers.

The Norwich Public Library does not monitor or censor the information accessible though the Internet. Please be aware that not all sites on the Internet provide information that is accurate, complete or current. Some sites provide information that may be considered controversial, offensive or inappropriate. Library patrons access the Internet at their own discretion.

LAPTOP COMPUTERS

The library has two laptop computers.   One is exclusively for the use of CD-ROMs and is located in the Children's Room.   See information below under CD-ROM Programs for more information.   The adult laptop offers Microsoft Word and Internet access.   You must be 18 years of age or older to use the adult laptop. You must leave a valid driver's license with the staff.   An additional permission form must be signed (see Staff.)

PARENTAL PRECAUTIONS

The Norwich Public Library does not monitor or censor the information your child can access though the Internet. It is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian to ensure that their child uses the Internet in an appropriate and safe manner. Parents/legal guardians are encouraged to be present and supervise their child's Internet use at the Library. As is the case with all other library materials, any restriction of a child's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the child's parent/legal guardian. Parents are encouraged to read supplemental information that Norwich Public Library provides from the American Library Association, Cyberspace for Parents & Kids, which contains information concerning the Internet and your child. Copies of this manual are available in the children's room.   For more information, visit http://www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites/.

WORD PROCESSING

Library patrons may utilize the word processing application, Microsoft Word , on the four computers; files may be saved onto a disk or transferred via email. Word-processed files may also be printed for a $.10 per page fee.

CD-ROM PROGRAMS

A laptop computer in the Children's Room is reserved for CD-ROM use only.   Users must have a library card in their own name.   This laptop may be checked-out for use in the Children's Room.   Children 8 years of age or older may check out the laptop without a parent/guardian with them. Those younger than 8 must be supervised by a parent/guardian.   There is a 30-minute time limit unless no one else is waiting to use it.   CD-ROMs are to be handled, inserted and ejected, by library staff only; this is to prevent patrons from becoming responsible for damaged equipment and software. Personal CD-ROMs may not be brought in by patrons.

COMPUTER USE GUIDELINES

All computer users are responsible for reading and complying with the Norwich Public Library Computer and Internet Use Policies and Computer Use Guidelines.

All patrons must sign in at the circulation desk.

PATRON RESPONSIBILITIES
